In general, I think it’s just as well that class rank be de-emphasized because grading, sorry to say, is such an inherently flawed, subjective process.
Anyone who has ever been a student (that is, everyone) can cite examples. You know, about the time when a brilliant but lazy kid who never did homework wound up with a “B” in a class, which happened to be the same grade earned by a not-so-bright but incredibly hardworking kid who also happened to endlessly suck up to the teacher.

That’s the nature of the beast. Most schools use this sort of holistic approach, as opposed to a model known as “standards-based” that tries to isolate exactly what skills have been mastered. (Alas, those systems tend to get complicated.)
Anyway, the traditional holistic grading system is further flawed because of leveling. Schools typically give more weight to harder courses (AP more than college prep, for example) when calculating grade point averages and, from that, class rank. But schools often differ in how this works. (Is a “B” is honors English the same as an “A” in college prep English? Some places, yes, but not everywhere,)
